Capella, Kings Cross

Capella, AKA King Cross S4, is a mixed-use building designed by Allies and Morrison Architects.
Located on Lewis Cubitt Square, a prime location in the Kings Cross Central development by property developers Argent, the project comprises two residential blocks on an L-shaped plan, arranged in a playful stepped and recessed terrace composition, above retail units at street level.

The building provides a striking expression to the West edge of Cubitt Square, whilst maintaining urban continuity to Canal Reach to the West of the development, via its Southern front along Keskidee Way.

The facades comprise buff brick-faced, and white and green textured precast concrete panels by Explore Manufacturing, with strategically concealed joints between precast panels in the articulation of the façade, as well as punched timber-aluminium composite windows and areas of aluminium stick curtain walling at street level.

The facades are animated by slide-on prefabricated steel balconies of varying sizes, with aluminium and GRC soffits. The balconies are fixed to stubs cast into the precast concrete panels, an innovative solution eliminating the thermal bridge and challenging waterproofing details issues commonly associated with a traditional solution of stub fixings in the slab.

FMDC’s involvement in the project started at early design stages, and through to completion in a Client Monitoring Team capacity to Argent during the construction stages, with Laing O’Rourke as Main Contractor.
