Facade and Materials Design Consultants (FMDC Ltd was incorporated in late 2012 and commenced trading in January 2013. It was started by the Founding Directors who have worked closely together for many years, most holding senior level positions at Ove Arup and Partners before leaving to start the company. In 2023 the firm became an Employee Ownership Trust, which ensures a robust succession plan and longevity moving forward
The company has 5 full time Directors, 8 AD/Associates, and a number of other experienced staff, including access to specialist sub-consultants, who have all worked together for about 15 to 20 years.
Having started as a team of 4, we have been able to grow organically due to the success in securing some excellent commissions for prestigious projects, predominantly for leading developers. Significantly, we have many repeat commissions that is an indication of the high level of satisfaction for our work and expertise. We currently have 25 full time staff and have become one of the leading players in the UK Facade and Materials Engineering consultancy market.
On most projects we are asked to offer a comprehensive ‘full service’. This includes front end design at scheme and concept stage, through detailed design and tender documentation, culminating in sub-contractor submission review, factory visits, witnessing of testing and site visits.
Stone, concrete, brick, terracotta, metals and glass are all materials that we offer specialist expertise in. We have 3 of the foremost stone consultants in the country, with excellent knowledge and connections, whilst our concrete specialist has also been integral in the development of some of the highest profile and award-winning concrete architecture in recent years. We also work closely with a sub-consultant metallurgist, who we have known for over 20 years. Structural Engineering, Building Physics analysis and 3d modelling are all integral to the scope of service we offer.
We believe our unique business model ensures a closer personal service, with project delivery overseen from senior, often Director level staff, is a notable advantage in guaranteeing final client satisfaction.
We are familiar with procurement routes and are well known to professional teams and the sub-contractors who are likely to tender the facades package works. Our excellent track record in Specification writing and testing requirements for large ambitious projects, has led to the successful completion of many challenging schemes. Our designers pro-actively contribute to the process, in most sectors on projects both in the UK and overseas. Our approach increases simplicity, whilst ensuring quality, and proposes buildable designs that in turn can be competitively priced by the industry.
We are particularly familiar with the London Market, including high rise, having upwards of 50 live projects in the capital at any one time, in different stages of progression from design to implementation on site.
We also work internationally on selected projects with clients/collaborators whom we have established strong relationships with over the years. FMDC overseas projects have included various retail projects in the Far East, taken through CD to DD stage.
