Some of the historic stone elevations were carefully dismantled and incorporated into remodelled elevations which introduced a new floor and reworked other carefully considered interventions.
Eric Parry were architects for the project, who employed FMDC as sub-consultants, with this being one of the earlier collaborations between practices, which has since grown to involvement in many other buildings. The redevelopment includes refurbished bronze windows and a new entrance, to create an elegant new street frontage. Opening windows allow a mixed-mode ventilation strategy, which accompanies a general performance upgrade to the elevations, that has delivered a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating for the project.
FMDC project involvement included writing the performance specification and post-contract engagement, including site inspections.
The redevelopment was shortlisted for a BCO award in 2023, and a Civic Trust award in 2022. Completed building photographs by Dirk Lindner
