Midland Goods Shed, Kings Cross

The Midland Goods Shed is the redevelopment of a historic Victorian railway structure, originally completed in 1850.
Bennetts Associates were architects for the scheme which brought back to life this industrial building, which sits as part of the Grade 2 listed Granary complex, within the Regents Canal conservation area, to the north of the Kings Cross Central development.

FMDC were sub-consultants to Bennetts, and engaged in the early design stages to progress the detailing and specification of the facade.  Our role later extended to a limited site role.

The facades fronting the Waitrose food hall comprise glazing set into cantilevered steel ‘goalposts’, to create a frameless clerestory above. The glazing is a mix of clear vision and opaque, employing a Sefar mess interlayer to create visual interest.

The system was required to overcome complex large movements at the head, created by the new interface with the existing Victorian roof structure.

The project was FMDC’s first with Bennetts, which has since grown into many other project collaborations with the practice, either as sub-consultants or as external design team members.
